You should aware that Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday is the last day of carnival which runs from January 6th (12th night) to Mardi Gras. The Wednesday after fat tuesday is the start of Lent which for many religious groups is a 40 day period of fasting leading up to Easter.
I am an atheist so I could care less about the religious parts but it would make more sense to have the 2nd annual SLC Mardi Gras the weekend before Fat Tuesday (during the carnival period) not the weekend after (during lent).
